Boys Varsity 'A' League Playoffs
PSAL A PLAYOFFS
For the early years of the PSAL the playoff information I have compiled thru research mainly focuses on the quarterfinals to the finals. Unfortunately there is missing info in some cases.
In 1935-1936 the PSAL added a 5th team to the city championship, as the # of city-wide 'A' divisions changed from 4 to 5.
On March 17, 1936 the PSAL High School Games Committee approved a plan in a meeting at the Astor Hotel in Manhattan.
For the 1st time, a round robin program would decide who the PSAL city-wide champion would be.
5 teams would be involved in the round robin:
Jefferson, Monroe, Tilden, Textile & Newtown (Newtown defeated Cleveland in a tie-breaker for the Queens championship.
Ultimately Jefferson and Monroe would finish atop the round robin with 3-1 records. They would be co- city champions, despite the fact that Jefferson won the head-to-head battle between them. The Games Committee did not award the title to the head to head winner.
